I ran across IO-Data’s AVeL LinkPlayer2. It’s very similar to the Buffalo Linkstation but it is out right now and lacks the 802.11G functionality. Since my set-up has wired ethernet at the television I will probably opt for this one instead of the Buffalo unit.

I have been waiting for a product like this for a long time.

The Buffalo LinkTheater has(almost) everything I am looking for.

Let me give you a sample:

Progressive scan DVD Player

802.11G/B wireless capability.

Output to HDTV (via component – no DVI/HDMI at this time )

USB 2.0 for attaching external drives.

WMV, WMVHD, DIVX, DIVX HD, XVID, DVD, VOB/IFO playback!

It’s a little pricey at an estimated street price of $300. On the other hand, a high end DVD player would cost much more. My only issue with it is that it doesn’t have DVI/HDMI output so it won’t look quite as good as a progressive scan DVD player that had DVI/HDMI. The unit will output to Svideo or composite if you don’t have an HDTV. It also has an ethernet port if you don’t want to use the wireless capability. There is a coaxial and a digital (optical) output for Dolby/DTS, etc.

Now I haven’t seen it yet but I will have one soon after they hit the shelves so stay tuned for more info or e-mail me in mid February to see what I think.

Here’s a link to the product page at Buffalo.
